It is therefore important that we know about bone related ailments that
you can easily prevent with a healthy lifestyle.
Osteoporosis is one such ailment that strikes people
especially in old age. The term osteoporosis implies ‘porous bones’.
When calcium in the bones depletes, it makes the bone density very low.
Low bone density makes the bones to snap easily and leaves you straddled
to your bed with fractures. If you fall, your bones are most likely to
get fractured. Our bone health is best at the age of thirty years after
which the bone density starts plunging gradually.
What Causes Osteoporosis?
All our lives, the bones are rebuilding themselves. A
protein called ‘Collagen’ and a mineral called ‘Calcium phosphate’ build
up the bone strength. Collagen helps in building the bone structure and
calcium phosphate hardens the bones. As we grow older, the rate of
building bones decreases due to lesser amount of collagen and calcium
phosphate available in the body. This leads to frequent bone fractures.
What Are Your Chances of Getting Osteoporosis?
Various factors make you prone to getting osteoporosis. They are as follows:
- Old age especially after the age of 50 years is a natural cause of decreasing bone density. However, not every person growing old gets osteoporosis.
- Being female is another big factor responsible for the occurrence of osteoporosis. Bones of women are thinner as compared to those of men. So, with age women’s bones become more porous easily than men’s bones.
- Menopause is a major cause of osteoporosis. Bone density depletes sharply after 6 to 7 years from menopause.
- Low body weight is also responsible for thinning of bones.
- Smoking and alcoholism also lead to a decline in bone density faster than that in non-smokers and non-alcoholics.
- Heredity and other ailments like hormonal disorders, asthma, type 1 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis also increase the chances of getting osteoporosis in old age.
Things to Avoid:
- Excessive intake of salt
- Canned and preserved foods
- Caffeine in the form of tea, coffee etc.
- Smoking and alcohol
Things to Do:
- Increase the intake of vitamin D – drink milk fortified with vitamin D.
- Eat more yoghurt, fortified cereals and cheese
- Eat fish like salmon and sardines to build up the bones
- Step up the intake of Calcium. For example, drink lots of orange juice, or take calcium supplements.
